The Kolhapuri chappal is a world famous handcrafted footwear which is specially designed in Kolhapur town of Maharashtra. The traditional design of this footwear is very famous not only in India but across the globe. The Kolhapuri footwear came into existence in the 13thcentury. It was started and designed by the Saudagar family in 1920. This was also known as the chappal (slipper) with ears or kanwali for its two side flaps. As the leather is grazed, it becomes hard and durable for daily purpose. The original Kolhapuri is made using buffalo hide and thick sole thread which was able to withstand even in high degree of heat. There are no nails used in the footwear, stitching and punching, which is made with hand. This footwear does not cause any harm to the feet. The making of this footwear is quite simple where two parallel pieces of leather are joined and stitched with strings of leather. This leather is said to have small pores which absorbs heat and thereby gives cooling effect to the feet. To give them darker appeal, these chappals are dipped in diesel. As it is known for its chunky, ruggedness and durability it is also available in vibrant colours, different sizes and patterns. The authentic Kolhapuri is made with pure leather. Inspite of all the financial constraints faced by the craftsman, one should look into this as a pure Indian art which has to be nourished and preserved not only as footwear but as heritage. The makers of this footwear put their dedication and hard workto exhibit our rich culture. Apart from theKolhapur variety, there are two more types: the Kaposi and Dongri, both made from original buffalo leather.
