OPTIMISTIC OPINION: SCIENCE AND BANGALORE BY ANUBHUTI BHUSARI

“Amid capitalism, communalism, corruption, and global warming, the coronavirus has evoked a sense of humanism and given a big push to innovation. It has shown us the power of science and the human spirit. We cannot go back to our old ways. It is time to see the world through a fresh pair of eyes”, says Dr. Vishal Rao.

With the COVID-19 entering our lives, our life has hit on a toll affecting people’s not only physical health but mental health as well. The first case was reported in the month of January in the state of Kerala. It is only within few days, there was an influx of anguish all over the country. With Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai being the most affected cities, there was Bangalore that led science take a lead role and called out a plan of action.

SYNDROMIC APPROACH

One of the technique used by the city was ‘Syndromic Surveillance’. This approach involved tracing the patients affected by cough and cold. At first, clear instructions were given to the medical stores to note down all those people’s information who bought medicines for healing of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Furthermore, the government of Karnataka ought to test these people for the same. Thereupon, Karnataka became the highest State for having the most number of cases by testing 3.500 per million people. This has on a large scale helped to detect the positive cases. At the same time, good public health surveillance has also taken care of these cases.

CONVALESCENT PLASMA THEORY

The Convalescent plasma therapy has been proven to a successful cure for an epidemic like Swine Flu and the Ebola virus in the past. With the health care facilities administered in Bangalore, it turned out to be the first city have a clinical trial with this theory. The therapy involves plasma i.e. the blood with red, white cells and plasma are removed from a person who had cured from the disease termed as convalescent. The convalescent has antibodies for the disease that can help in the recover of an individual and fighting with the virus. Various immunologists in the city are also working on a cure to the virus by following the Cytokine therapy.

CONCLUSION

With the increasing number of cases, the government needs to follow a ‘Wolf Pack Theory’. The theory mainly deals with the fact how the leaders need to lead the country but from behind. This mainly dwells in that the leaders need to support the scientific community and the healthcare system of the country if they really want to fight this war. The leaders need to provide a strong backing to the researchers, scientists and doctors so that the best can be done. It is the only way how the pandemic can be fought. It is only science and the health professionals that we can rely on in these circumstances and they should be given the best financial assistance at this moment to fight this pandemic. #IndiaFightsCorona
